Some cool news!

So this happened! Thank you everyone.  A lot of people worked very hard on this show, and it’s so gratifying to see that their efforts resonated with the fans.         And here’s the Season 3 writer’s room starting up!

New York Comic Con!!!

So Daniel and I will be at NYCC this year, doing a number of events. We have a booth signing at the Orbit booth on Saturday starting at 11am. And for those who line up early, we’ll be giving out some small props we stole from the TV show. These are things that actually appeared on the camera and were handled by the actors, so they’re unique collector’s items. They’re first come first served, and supplies are limited, so line […]

Toronto Diary Day Twenty Six, that’s a wrap baby!

So here we are at wrap. Episode 13 is in the can. All that’s left is another five months of post production. So let’s talk about that. Today, Naren Shankar and I spent most of our day over with the Visual Effects folks doing approvals on the episode one and two effects. Episode two is especially effects heavy, with a lot of complex choreography in the story telling. Even at this late stage, we’re still tweaking the exact staging. Keeping […]

Toronto Diary Day Twenty Four

So I want to talk about props today, and I wanted to share a picture, and then when it came time to take it, I found I had conflicts. So, short story long… Turns out it’s hard to make a TV show where nearly everything that appears on screen has to be built from scratch. I mean, think about that. For most TV shows, the props department buys almost everything they need, and builds very little. You make a modern […]

So there was no blog post yesterday because yesterday was the wrap party and people got up to some shenanigans.

Toronto Diary Day Twenty

Two heads are better than one. So today James S.A. Corey needed to do two things. He needed to be on set with the production as we shot some very complex scenes for the last episode of season 2. He also needed to spend the day with our marketing people doing EPK, which means Electronic Press Kit. James is a clever fellow, and he achieved this by sending one half of himself to set, and the other to the EPK […]

Toronto Diary Day Eighteen

Wow, lots to talk about today. So, first day of shooting after the long weekend, and we didn’t give ourselves an easy schedule for the day. Our episode 13 director had to deal with a ton of action, squibs, blood packs, stunt work, and furniture tossing today. And, because Daniel and I wrote the episode, all of it was peppered with dialog and back and forths between the characters. We did not create an easy day for either the director […]

Toronto Diary Day Sixteen

There is literally nothing to post about today, since it was a Sunday on a long holiday weekend. Daniel worked on some copy edits. I played board games with some friends. That’s pretty much it. But I’m curious how many people are reading these things. So let’s do a contest. Tweet “Script me baby” @jamessacorey on twitter and be entered into a drawing to get a signed copy of the scrip to episode 13 of this season. It’s an episode […]

So, this will be sort of a short one. Today we did a VFX spotting session, where we went through an episode scene by scene and discussed the specific Visual Effects in those scenes. Our even block VFX supervisor, Bret Culp, sat with us and took notes and asked questions and helped dial it in. It’s astonishing how much work goes into planning and then executing the VFX for this show. We also did a VFX meeting to discuss motion […]

Let’s talk tech scouts. So, the tech scout is fascinating the first time you do one, and mind numbing every subsequent time. Here’s what happens: For this particular scout, the 1st AD (they come up a lot on here, don’t they?) takes the director, the production designer, the construction coordinator, the VFX supervisor, the Special Effects key, the Best Boy Grip, the Gaffer, the Stunt Coordinator, and the episode producers (us!) along on a tour of the sets. This is […]
