First Caliban’s War review!

05.18.12
by Ty Franck

It looks like Publisher’s Weekly liked it. I especially like that they are “itching for the third book.”  I guess that means we did it right. Don’t skip to the end or anything, but I came up with the last line of this book, and I think it’s the coolest thing I ever did.  It’s all downhill after this.

Giving Birth

Depending on your particular process, books start out in a lot of different ways. For some writers they begin as a moment, one particular scene that leaps into their head fully formed. George RR Martin has often said that the entire Ice and Fire saga began with the scene of Ned Stark and his boys finding the dire wolf pups. I know writers who always begin from the end. They have their climactic scene in mind, and they work backwards […]

The Sophomore Slump

So ‘Caliban’s War’, the second book in The Expanse series, went off to our publisher yesterday.   It’s a massive tome of 170,000 words, and I did a full re-read and edit of it in just two days before sending it off.  So this entire blog post may just be delirium caused by lack of sleep. There’s a lot to like.  I like our new characters and what we put them through.  I still love Holden’s little crew on the Rocinante.  […]

Space stations!

io9 has a nifty bunch of videos of possible space habitats.  The habitat in an asteroid video is posted next to a mention of Leviathan Wakes and Greg Bear’s book Eon.  This type of asteroid habitat is very different from the cramped corridors of our much less posh stations in Leviathan Wakes, but it’s what I imagine our Belters working their way up to eventually. Also, getting mentioned in the same breath as Greg Bear doesn’t suck.

Overweight middle aged white guys talking about space ships. The only thing that saves this is that we have the incomparable Carrie Vaughn doing the interview, and she is neither middle aged, nor overweight, nor a guy. Collaboration

So, three people have asked me about collaboration, specifically my collaboration with Daniel on the Expanse series, in the last couple days. I thought it might be nice to explain the origin of James Corey and his project The Expanse. Why: First off, the obvious answer. Daniel and I are collaborating on this project because we actually want to. We’ve been friends longer than we’ve been writing partners. His family hangs out at my house, my wife and I hang […]

We Got Cover Art (and more stuff too)

by Daniel Abraham

Your friends and mine at Orbit have announced the official release of the Leviathan Wakes cover.  And nifty new wallpaper too!  Lo, I am spiffed. Ty would be spiffed too, but he’s traveling to exotic locations and having adventures.  I think it says something about our relative characters that his travel-related injuries involved a drunken race with a professional stunt man down a night-darkened road in Morocco while mine was food poisoning in Denver.

Call for Questions

So as part of the MileHiCon festivities next week, Ty and I (in our James S. A. Corey drag) are going to be interviewed by Carrie Vaughn on video. We’ve got the camera and the set up and the time and all those things, but I’m a little shy on ideas to hand to Carrie.  Knowing the three of us, it’s entirely possible that the entire interview will be about Firefly, Invader Zim, and exactly how you’d do a crossover […]
